As spring returns to the city, the In Bloom installation represents a return of optimism and a re-emergence of life.

For the exterior entrance of the Oakridge Presentation Centre in Vancouver, Westbank proposed to have a light installation composed of an explosion of flowers growing from the glass canopy. Three sizes of light fixtures were carefully designed to allow for the physical manipulation of the petal shapes, which gives a more organic variation to the display. The fixtures were then developed to conceal all electronic components and the hanging system was developed to "clip onto" the existing facade without requiring invasive fasteners.

The final installation consists of over 100 light fixtures, referencing the iconic cherry blossoms of Vancouver. The aluminum petals are all bent by hand and a dichroic film was laminated to the surface to produce a colour shifting effect. The flowers colour shift in daylight as they are viewed from different angles and also are lit internally at night by embedded LED lights. The light colours can be selected via remote control or set to a number of pre-programmed transitions.

The installation is also fully removable/reusable, which will allow it to remain at its current location for a number of years and to be reinstalled at another permanent location in the future.
